For many small businesses, energy costs are simply part of doing business. But for NONAM, an artisan pâté en croûte producer based in Courbevoie, France, a closer look at energy consumption revealed significant opportunities for savings.
Founded by Manon Montessuy, NONAM is a production laboratory dedicated to creating artisan pâtés en croûte without additives. In early 2026, the company joined the ECOBoost programme after being contacted by the Chamber of Crafts and Trades (CMA) following the award of an artisan tourism label.
A Fresh Look at Energy Use
When Manon first heard about the programme, she was unsure whether it would be relevant. Her production facility was only two and a half years old, and she assumed that a modern workspace would already be operating efficiently.
However, understanding where energy was being consumed and how costs could be reduced was an important consideration for a growing business.
“I wanted to better understand our energy consumption and where the company’s money was going. Any savings would be valuable for a young business.”
Quick Assessment, Practical Actions
The ECOBoost process moved quickly. Within weeks of joining the programme, an energy advisor visited the production site to carry out a detailed assessment of energy consumption and identify practical improvements.
Following the assessment, a report was delivered and a series of recommendations were put into practice. These included:
- Insulating the hot water tank, which was located in a cold production area, to reduce heat loss.
- Analysing electricity contracts and consumption data, which revealed that a single electricity meter was sufficient for the business's needs.
- Relocating refrigeration system motors outside the building, helping to lower indoor temperatures and reduce cooling-related electricity consumption.
These measures required relatively simple changes but delivered substantial results.
Significant Savings
The outcome exceeded expectations.
By implementing the recommended actions, NONAM achieved a 25% reduction in its electricity bill. For a small manufacturing business, this represents a significant saving and demonstrates how even modern facilities can benefit from a professional energy review.
Reflecting on the experience, Manon admits she nearly missed the opportunity.
“At first, I declined the offer because I didn't think it would be relevant for my business. Looking back, I'm very grateful that the CMA insisted. The savings are real.”
A Recommendation for Other SMEs
Today, Manon actively encourages other artisans and small businesses to participate in programmes like ECOBoost.
Beyond reducing energy costs, the programme provided valuable insight into how the business operates, helping NONAM better understand its electricity consumption, improve efficiency and strengthen its financial resilience.
NONAM's experience shows that energy savings are often closer than businesses think. Sometimes, a fresh perspective is all it takes to uncover them.
